MV1000 Application Notes

Interfacing the Hitachi KP-F1 camera to the MV-1000/1300 board

Overview

M-Vision-1000
The M-Vision-1000 (MV-1000) is a monochrome digitizer board, which interfaces to the PCI bus. The MV-1000 product line includes a base board with analog camera support, a 3 Megabyte memory upgrade module (MV-1200), and an RGB module (MV-1300).

The KP-F1 may be connected to the MV-1000 which will allow independent capture of either channel, but not simultaneously. Simultaneous capture of both channels is supported by using an MV-1300 RGB interface module. In this mode, the two channel signals are sent to two separate inputs on the MV-1300. The asynchronous reset capability of the KP-F1 may be externally stimulated or may be driven by a general purpose bit on the MV-1000.

KP-F1 Camera
The KP-F1 camera from Hitachi comes in two versions, EIA and CCIR. The KP-F1 is a full-frame, high performance, high sensitivity, high resolution 692(H) x 504 (V) (EIA) or 823 (H) x 592 (V) (CCIR), 8-bit gray scale, camera with electronic shutter and field on demand capability as well as continuous video output.

The KP-F1 requires no input signals for basic operation. However, the user can drive the TRIGGER A for single field on demand operation via a general purpose bit on the MV-1000 board. Switches inside the KP-F1 enable this mode. Refer to the KP-F1 Operation Guide for details. In the field on demand mode, the user may also externally control the Trigger A signal, using the MV-1000/MV-1300 to capture the video signal. Figure 1 shows the timing in 1N mode single trigger, field on demand operation. In this mode, exposure starts at the pulse rising edge and ends at the pulse falling edge. The vertical sync is reset at the falling edge and the video output is immediately transferred.

Cable Connections
Video Out 1 of the KP-F1 should connect to the GREEN channel of the MV-1300. Video Out 2 of the KP-F1 should connect to the BLUE channel of the MV-1300. These connections are shown in Figure 2a.

If Single Trigger Field on Demand operation is desired, a special power cable (MVC-HD-KPF1) has a BNC connector that drives the Trigger A signal. To drive the Trigger A signal with the MV-1000, as in the DUALWIN program discussed later in this application note, the yellow cable of an MVC-7 cable may be used. Figure 2b illustrates this configuration.

Camera Configuration Files
From a software point of view, the concept of video acquisition from standard or non-standard cameras is based on the use of a Camera Configuration File. Camera "Config" files are ASCII files that hold all of the values relevant to the proper usage of a particular camera with the MV-1000.

Camera Configuration files for most commercially available cameras are included on a MuTech distribution diskette and by default are loaded into the directory ..\mv-1000\camcfg. All MuTech distribution software use these Camera Config Files to set the board and chip registers into the correct state to work with a particular camera. The Camera Configuration Files for six video configurations of the KP-F1 included on the Hitachi KP-F1 Demonstration Disk are listed below.

EIA or CCIR Single or Dual Channel DEMO or DUALWIN .ini Filename
EIA Single (1N) DEMO 1n.ini
EIA Dual (2N) DEMO 2n.ini
EIA Single (1N) DUALWIN kpf1s.ini
EIA Dual (2N) DUALWIN kpf1t.ini
CCIR Single (1N) DEMO 1nccir.ini
CCIR Dual (2N) DEMO 2nccir.ini

Demonstration Software

The KP-F1 may be used in normal video modes by using the MuTech demonstration program provided on the M-Vision 1000 Video Digitizer Distribution Disk. Any of the above .ini files that are appropriate for a specific camera configuration may be used.

A special Windows 3.1 program, DUALWIN.EXE, may be used to demonstrate either simultaneous dual channel capture or single trigger, field on demand operation. This program and all support files are provided on the Hitachi KP-F1 Demonstration Disk. Please consult the README.TXT file provided with this program or the online help for additional operating instructions.
